Landlocked countries in Africa: scope and list

Countries in the game’s 195-country catalogue, grouped in Africa by the retained Natural Earth atlas. Landlocked means no coastline on an ocean or an ocean-connected sea.

16 countries in this list.

  • Botswana
  • Burkina Faso
  • Burundi
  • Central African Republic
  • Chad
  • Eswatini
  • Ethiopia
  • Lesotho
  • Malawi
  • Mali
  • Niger
  • Rwanda
  • South Sudan
  • Uganda
  • Zambia
  • Zimbabwe

What to notice

Lesotho is entirely surrounded by South Africa; Eswatini also borders Mozambique. Ethiopia has no coastline, while Eritrea does. Lakes do not make Malawi or Uganda coastal: the definition concerns access to an ocean-connected sea, not the presence of water.
