The explorer’s handbook
Farflung help and frequently asked questions
Rules, recovery, and the details that make your next expedition smoother.
Is this game free?+
Yes. Daily play, unlimited practice, friend challenges, and private leagues are free. There are no paid attempts or score boosts.
Do I need an account?+
You can play as a guest. When sign-in is available, sign in before starting a ranked daily game to join the leaderboard and save progress across devices. The separate tutorial is safe to try before ranked play.
Can I try today’s questions and rank later?+
Not on the same known identity. Opening today’s casual challenge makes that day’s ranked attempt unavailable. This includes a guest session later linked to your account.
How does the timer work?+
Timed rounds last 60 seconds. The server keeps time. Opening an in-game panel pauses the clock after the server confirms it. Close all panels to resume. Refreshing, switching tabs, or losing your connection does not start a new pause. Daily competitions still close at their published UTC cutoff. At the deadline, the last valid selection saved on the server is pinned automatically. With no saved selection, the round scores zero.
What if I lose my connection?+
A selection only counts once the page says “Selection saved.” Your timer keeps running while offline. Reconnect and use Resume expedition to recover the server’s latest state. An unsaved offline choice cannot be backdated.
Can I play without a timer?+
Choose Wander. It includes a searchable country list and optional labels. These assists are separate from the timed daily leaderboard.
Can I play again today?+
You have one ranked attempt each UTC day. Unlimited, Wander, trails, and closed archive challenges remain available after you finish.
When does the daily game change?+
A new challenge opens at 00:00 UTC. The home page shows the next reset in your local time. A ranked game started before midnight keeps its existing session limit, up to ten minutes from the start. The previous board closes at 00:10 UTC.
Can my score change as other people play?+
No. Each competition uses the same scoring snapshot, fixed before it opens. A verified question error can lead to an announced correction applied consistently to all affected attempts.
Does AI decide whether I am right?+
No. Correctness comes from a reviewed answer set and explicit scope. An optional AI process can suggest rarity estimates before publication. No live AI call grades your pin.
Why do players share a rank?+
Only total kilometres determine position. Equal scores tie; time is not a hidden tie-breaker. A weekly board adds each player’s best five eligible daily scores in the UTC Monday-to-Sunday week.
How do I select small countries?+
Zoom in with the map controls and use the small-country markers. You can also focus the map with Tab, move spatially with arrow keys, and select with Enter. In Wander, search by a country’s name.
Can I turn off the music?+
Yes. Sound starts off. Music and sound effects have separate controls in Settings. Motion can be reduced without hiding results or changing game rules.
How do I report a factual mistake?+
Choose Report this question below your result. Explain the problem and, where possible, include a reliable source. Reports are reviewed; a model’s answer is not treated as proof.
Is this the original Farflung?+
No. This is an independently developed edition with its own questions, scoring, artwork, and features. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by the creators of the original Farflung game.
Farflung help for your data and private spaces
Guest progress belongs to the current signed session until linked to an account. Clearing your cookies can lose access to guest progress. Private leagues require sign-in and an invitation. Owners can remove members and revoke invitations; members can leave. A member’s email address is never shown on the public board.
Use Settings to update your display name, select an avatar, export or delete personal records where available, and manage sound and motion.
